Summer 2021

We needed reliable internet for much of the trip, so we had to leave the tent at home this year. We were still happy to be outside in cooler weather even if we didn’t camp. We found another nice hike just outside of Durango at Falls Creek.

Until this summer, we’d never heard of Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, but it was well worth a visit in southwestern Colorado. We met Carrie’s parents there for a day trip. (They drove so much farther.) Puebloan ruins are scattered all over this area, and the monument serves to protect and preserve their history.

Adventure Bear reminds you that the Executive Branch of the U.S. Government provides us with many benefits. Go Department of the Interior!
Shown here is the Lowry site, originally three stories with more than forty rooms. The metal roof is a modern part of the preservation effort.

We are staying in Durango for a while so Carrie can teach a summer school class. We hiked up the road at Coal Bank Pass. Spectacular, tall wildflowers and beautiful mountains. We made it down to the car just as the first rumble of thunder was rolling in.

After the scenery, the next best part of a hike is when you approach the trail head where the car is parked, reach into the pocket where your keys are, and jingle them, knowing you haven’t somehow lost them on the trail.

Really tall wildflowers, as Carrie is holding Adventure Bear as high above her head as possible.

A.B. hates it when Jay’s commentary reveals production secrets. Don’t look under the bear; look at the bear!

Adventure Bear was kind of looking for trouble at the Poncha Springs playground. He found an old school Merry-Go-Round, which suggests that their parks department has unlimited liability insurance.

A.B.’s Agent is compelled (by contract) to correct the record. In fact he was not “looking for trouble,” but merely enjoying the available recreational opportunities.

He was also trying be be a positive influence on the Misunderstood Shark at the Salida Public Library. Watch those teeth, A.B.

Last hiking day near Breckenridge. Hoosier Pass and Blue Lakes, both just south of town.

What is the ratio of bear to people photos in the Contract…A.B. needs to check.
More wildflowers are coming – stay tuned!

Also near Breckenridge was the Frisco Adventure Park. “Adventure” branding is everywhere.

SpokesBear for hire!

Our intrepid bear was not intimidated by the Breckenridge Trail Troll, but all involved found him a bit creepy.

He also braved the Spam Fries at a shady spot in town. Something we ate called Disco Tots resulted in a photo boycott, due to the potential spill factor from the gravy-laden bowl of potato goo. It was delicious.

The bear and I took a drive up Boreas Pass Road.
Breckenridge is popular for many reasons, and the great mountain views are never far away.

This was a boys-only trip because A.B.’s Agent was teaching Summer School. She worries…how close are you to the edge little bear?

Unskilled, ultra-zoomed selfie.

This is what happens when you let the bear behind the camera…

Adventure Bear is of two minds when it comes to paying attention to restrictive or warning signs. “No Skating” in July, no problem. But “Stay Off Roof”, that’s just a challenge from the man.

Fortunately, there was no restriction on riding the giant duck in front of the Breckenridge Public Library.

Thanks for following along with our little adventures!

You can see that some of these stunts are getting more demanding…maybe not the duck – but the roof!

Some drives and hikes are definitely worth taking beyond where the pavement ends.
Near Breckenridge, CO.

Not pictured: Adventure Bear. What is up with that?? Clearly a contract violation….

The annual photo with Holiday Bear at Carrie’s parents’ home in Grand Junction is always a treat.
Happy July 4th, everyone!

This kind of magic doesn’t just happen by itself…be sure to check out BTS Grand Junction!

We visited Carrie’s parents in Grand Junction, Colorado, which is near the Colorado National Monument, which was established way back in 1911. Great visiting and cool natural wonders.

The Department of the Interior is one of 15 Cabinet Departments in the Executive Branch! They do good work.

Always working – but not always with this much scenery!

Waking up early in Albuquerque means seeing the hot air balloons.

We stayed near the Petroglyph National Monument, with images carved into the
volcanic rocks, some dating back 3,000 years. We love the National Park Service,
and will be visiting several National Monuments on this trip.

Could the NPS have a better Spokesbear? Smokey needs a partner!

Oh my. Carrie agreed to have a picture taken, and has allowed said photo to go on Facebook. It was a special chance to visit with the Denton family in Albuquerque that provides this rare opportunity.

The Dentons care for foster kitties, and Adventure Bear was happy to meet their latest baby. He was a good sport to go along with how the kitty wanted to play.

Ooof! Adventure Bear is very patient….

We got a fine welcome at our Airbnb in Albuquerque. Adventure Bear made himself right at home
