Summer 2023

Adventure Bear is back on the road! Follow the fun for the next several weeks.

A.B. has a new chariot this year. We were sad to replace the Versa (she served many miles), but happy to welcome the “New Versa.” We refuse to call it a Nissan Kicks, because that is a silly name for a car. Any hopes for an endorsement deal from Nissan are probably toast now….

Hot Springs, AR

Our first stop was in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where the family gathered to celebrate my (Jay’s) mom’s mumble-tieth birthday. I’m pretty old (Jay again!), so you may be able to guess which milestone birthday we were celebrating. Adventure Bear was in on the fun, and Courtney McVeigh took the official photographs, to be seen later.

Jay’s Mom brought Adventure Bear into the family nearly 30 years ago – thanks Mary Joe!

A.B.’s Agent off to the left negotiating a new contract clause. Note the power stance.
Courtney at work.
As always, A.B. is ready for his close up. Although in taking a second look at that hat, one does have to wonder about the absence of the fur and makeup team…

For her birthday, Jay’s mom sped around the lake on the tube with Zach (our oldest nephew). All the cool kids were doing it.

Go Gram – it’s your birthday!
Courtney and Uncle Jay. (A.B. is safely on shore. There were no bear-appropriate life jackets available….)
The young people. Adventure Bear is proud to have been able to spend time with them as part of his mentoring program.

Adventure Bear hit his first National Park of the summer in Hot Springs. We did not avail ourselves of the baths, but visiting our smallest national park was worth a trip into town.

A.B. would never miss a National Park! (See previous summers’ posts for details. Seriously – go look!)

No thermal baths for Adventure Bear; the fur and makeup team would be at a complete loss.

Little Rock, AR

We’ve been through Little Rock a few times, but have never visited the capitol. Adventure Bear insisted we stop, and he even auditioned to be the governor’s spokesbear. Application pending.

Adventure Bear always loves a good visit to a capitol building. The Arkansas capitol does not have the State Seal depicted on the floor like the Texas capitol. Instead, it has only a projected image, which makes A.B. worry about the state’s resources.
Spokesbear for Arkansas??

St. Louis, MO

If we are anywhere near St. Louis, we make sure to visit Carrie’s cousin, Nancy Hackler Goldstein, and her marvelous family. Nancy has the coolest new job, ever. She drives the train at the St. Louis Zoo! Here she is, showing Adventure Bear the ropes. The zoo is in Forest Park, home of the 1904 World’s Fair. It’s a beautiful place, with museums, gardens and other wonders.

A.B. loves all his fans, but how often does he get a behind the scenes look at the St. Louis Zoo?
Coming soon to the St. Louis Zoo Railroad? An electric train! (You heard it here first. A.B. is your up-to-the-minute reporter.)
A.B. has nothing but respect for his feline colleagues….
The view looking down from the Art Museum.
King Louis IX. As A.B. understands it, the original sculptor was underbid to produce this statue. Everyone apparently needs a union…

St. Louis, MO cont.

Nancy’s husband, Mark Goldstein, is part owner of Henke’s Tavern, the best casual joint in Florissant, Missouri. They always treat us so well!

Jay wears this hat proudly all over the United States and Canada!
Smaller hats Mark – A.B. needs a smaller hat!

We also stopped in Alton, Illinois, for a look at the mighty Mississippi River on a rainy day.

Thanks to Liz G. for a great tour of Alton!

Louisville, KY

Next stop for Adventure Bear? Louisville, Kentucky. That meant a visit to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum.

Adventure Bear isn’t too sure about this idea of people riding animals around a racetrack…
The stunt work on this shot is a little questionable. A.B. might be looking for a new P.A. before the summer is over.
Fun Fact: Apparently the architect of the stands never believed this center section could hold up over the long-term, so he refused to ever sit there!

Years ago, we learned of a famous(?) sandwich called the Hot Brown at the Brown Hotel in Downtown Louisville. It was delicious, and famous for good reason.

Jay’s text about this sandwich is woefully inadequate. There is an entire documentary called Sandwiches That You Will Like that is not to be missed. Very educational! https://www.pbs.org/food/shows/sandwiches-that-you-will-like

One final stop at the Muhammad Ali Center, where we learned more about his career and activism.

Lexington, KY and Ohio

We spent more than a full day in Lexington, Kentucky, and somehow managed to take no pictures at all. Nice town, so not sure how that happened.

On the road, we dodged the rain and visited the Ohio capitol in Columbus. We’d never been in Ohio before, so that’s one more state covered. [Don’t miss BTS 2023 for the terrible working conditions related to this photo…]

Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, MD

Wow! Adventure Bear made it to Annapolis, Maryland to see the U.S Naval Academy. All 4400 midshipmen sleep in one enormous dormitory. It’s an impressive place. We are grateful for the men and women who go here to learn, lead, and serve. Annapolis is the capital of Maryland, so of course we learned some history at the statehouse, including that In 1783 and 1784 it served as the capitol building of the United States.

This is the dormitory where all of them live. A.B. was impressed by the lack of dormitory smell!
Add one more State Capitol Building to the list of A.B.’s conquests. Is anyone keeping track?
Nothing famous here (hence Adventure Bear sat this one out). Just some nice architechture.

First, a huge and sincere message of thanks to Suzanne and Jim, our gracious and welcoming hosts in the D.C. area. Suzanne was Carrie’s roommate a few years (decades) ago when she lived here. We loved catching up with them, and the wonderful conversations. We could not have asked for a better time, and hope they feel the same way after sharing their home with us.

In Washington, we saw the monuments, memorials, and museums. The free and accessible Smithsonian Museums are destinations I hope everyone gets a chance to visit. They are treasures shared with all.

We got to visit our niece, Courtney, in her new home in D.C.. We could not be more proud of her. She took us to the National Cathedral and on a hike in Rock Creek Park. Next we are heading north, where the sun rises really early this time of year.

It was a sunny, warm day on the National Mall. Not Adventure Bear’s preferred climate, but scenic nonetheless.

See? Scenic!
National Cathedral – interior.
Exterior – and part of the gardens (a lovely hidden secret).
An adventure in Rock Creek Park (one of the first federally managed parks, established in 1890 – Fun Fact!)

Cooperstown, NY

We’ve never been to upstate New York, which means having never been to the Baseball Hall of Fame. A pilgrimage for fans, everybody is happy to be there, even Carrie. “Once in a lifetime,” she said more than once, indicating her plan to soak it all in, but just once.

A boy, a bear, and baseball.
Cooperstown was rainy and a little chilly. A.B. was glad he packed his scarf.
The Chicken seemed a little bit undignified, but you’ve got to admit it’s a great endorsement deal…
Don’t miss the Behind the Scenes shot, taken while A.B. and his Agent were roaming around the museum unsupervised.

First night camping in upstate New York. Then to Vermont to visit friends, quaint small towns, and more outdoor fun.

Camping in Cooperstown, NY. What a great way to see the Hall of Fame (plus – affordable!).
His Agent means well, but needs some supervision. (Where is that fur and makeup team??)
Middlebury, VT. Could it be more scenic? (Also home to a very excellent college.)
More scenic? Not possible.
Beavers? Otters? Not so much. But scenic? Heck yes. Thanks Betsy and Denny!

More camping and hiking at Lake Champlain, Vermont.
Something called a Maple Creemee is all the rage in Vermont. We found the best at Cookie Love.

A.B. feels compelled to note that he is not the team member who kept sampling the treats around the region.

Canada!

Hello Canada! Our first time in Montreal, where they speak French, and we do not. Because the people were very kind about our skill deficit in their language, our biggest struggle was over the details of where we could legally park the car.

We went to the Botanical Gardens, and Old Montreal, where the depth of our knowledge of Canadian history began to scratch the surface.

Adventure Bear is always in pursuit of diplomatic relations with other species.
A.B. insisted on visiting a museum in Montreal; first step to learning about a part of the world new to the team. What the team didn’t know could fill not just a book, but an entire series…

Ottawa, CA

I’ve learned and forgotten, many times, that Ottawa is Canada’s capital. Now that I’ve been there, I think I’ll remember. We drove up to the parliament buildings, and nearly got trapped in dueling protests.

The smoke from the wildfires was terrible on our second day, but we were mostly inside their amazing history museum. We came away much more informed, but still with so many questions. One take away is that when studying U.S. history, we should be learning the history of all of North America. We tend to minimize the French (and Spanish) influence on how we got here.

Team Adventure Bear goes to see all the capitols!
Where is my stepladder? I’m hardly in the frame at all…
Faithful Agent, trailer in tow.
This day’s view in Ottawa – quite lovely!
This day? Not so much.
Fortunately, Team A.B. was planning to visit the history museum anyway. Exterior featured here (that is a wolf, not a bear in the canoe).

Ithaca and Seneca Falls, NY

We returned to the U.S. in upstate New York, Ithaca and the Finger Lakes, to be specific. Waterfalls and wineries, and the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls.

There was also a scary haunted basement at our Airbnb where I did laundry. Adventurous, in its own way.

On our way to this scenic site, a tree fell across the hiking path. We heard it fall and arrived about 5 minutes later. Pretty adventurous hiking!
A lovely stop for lunch along one of the Finger Lakes. A.B. believes this was The Thirsty Owl vineyard. He is always happy to support entrepreneurs from other species!
An improvement on the original to be sure, but still very people-centric….
Adventure Bear did not see this first-hand. The only years he has done laundry is when his Agent has failed in contract negotiations. And even she hasn’t made the mistake of committing to Haunted Laundry…
